Been using Debian for years on the pc, with Ubuntu on the laptop for its 3G web and walk and general bling.

OpenOffice has a much easier maths formula editor than MS in my opinion, you can type text codes (watered down latex) rather than having to fiddle with the mouse.

I would also mention R, perl and the bash command line as being major improvements over MS, as well as the support available on various forums. Just google wget to see some truly amazing voodoo
